View Full Version : Possibly a very dumb GM engine question - better safe than sorry.

Some quick info to set the question:
The Oldsmobile Aurora used a modified Northstar engine platform, which had a bolt pattern that is nearly identical to the "GM Metric" bell housing bolt pattern (by all accounts I've read).

There is a block out there that can be bought (p/n 24502650 ) that uses the Aurora bell housing bolt pattern (more info here (http://www.jegs.com/i/GM-Performance/809/24502650/10002/-1)).

Right now my Gen I SBC is mated up to an F23 transmission, which uses the GM Metric bolt pattern, with the aid of a "mating" adapter plate, and a mounting adapter for the starter.

From what I read here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GM_bellhousing_patterns#GM_metric_pattern) the GM metric and Northstar/"shortstar" bellhousing bolt patterns close enough that the F23 would bolt up to that block without any issues. However, it looks like the starter position would change.

Is there anyway to know if/how I would mount up a starter? (even if I have to do a starter-adapter-plate still) -- besides getting the block and slapping an F23 on it and then playing around with starters?

I'd really like to eventually ditch the mating-adapter, and reclaim that inch of space - yes, that inch of space is actually making some other future plans for my Fiero more difficult.

Thanks!
